Roman Baths & Pump Room Recognised for Sustainable Weddings

Imagine exchanging vows beside the torchlit Great Bath, surrounded by 2,000 years of history. Now, one of Bath’s most iconic wedding venues has another reason to celebrate, having received accreditation for its commitment to sustainability.
The Roman Baths & Pump Room has been awarded accreditation by the Sustainable Wedding Alliance (SWA), recognising the steps being taken to reduce its environmental impact and make weddings more sustainable.
The historic venue, managed by Bath & North East Somerset Council, welcomes couples from across the UK and around the world, offering a setting that combines ancient Roman history with the Georgian elegance of the Pump Room.
And while the surroundings may be centuries old, the approach to running the venue is very much focused on the future.
A Greener Way to Say ‘I Do’
With more couples considering the environmental impact of their big day, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of wedding planning.
The Sustainable Wedding Alliance is an independent organisation working to improve environmental and ethical standards across the wedding industry.
Its accreditation recognises venues and suppliers that can demonstrate meaningful action on issues such as responsible sourcing, waste reduction and environmental impact.
For The Roman Baths & Pump Room, the recognition reflects work taking place behind the scenes to preserve the historic site while reducing the resources needed to operate it.
Michelle Miles, Founder and CEO of the Sustainable Wedding Alliance, praised the venue’s commitment, saying it was setting an example for other businesses in the wedding industry.
Ancient Water, Modern Technology
One of the most interesting sustainability measures at The Roman Baths involves the very thing that made the site famous in the first place: its naturally heated spring water.
An innovative heat pump system captures energy from the thermal water to help heat The Roman Baths and the nearby Bath World Heritage Centre, reducing reliance on gas.
Other measures include motion-sensitive lighting, automatic equipment shut-off systems and building management technology that adjusts operations around scheduled events.
The venue also maintains a zero-waste-to-landfill approach, with non-recyclable waste sent to a local energy recovery facility.
Its catering partner, Searcys, supports these efforts through responsible sourcing, working with local and British suppliers and taking steps to minimise food waste.
Protecting Bath’s Heritage for the Future
Councillor Paul Roper, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, welcomed the accreditation.
He said the recognition reflected the dedication of the teams and partners responsible for caring for the historic venue.
The council says its approach is about balancing the protection of one of Bath’s most important heritage sites with practical measures that will help ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations.
It’s a particularly interesting challenge for a venue where historic preservation and modern-day hospitality must work side by side.
A Special Place to Celebrate
The Roman Baths & Pump Room remains one of the country’s most distinctive wedding settings, from drinks receptions overlooking the torchlit Great Bath to wedding breakfasts beneath the chandeliers of the Georgian Pump Room.
And it’s just one of more than 40 approved wedding and civil partnership venues supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Registration Service.
Couples can explore a wide range of locations across Bath and the surrounding area, including historic buildings, museums, gardens and countryside venues.
The latest accreditation shows how even a venue with more than two millennia of history can continue to adapt, combining a memorable setting with a more environmentally responsible approach to celebrations.
