New High Sheriff for Wiltshire and Swindon 2026-27

Wiltshire’s new High Sheriff was sworn in on Friday 27 March in a ceremony which dates back to Saxon times. Dr Alexander Goodwin made his Declaration at The Parish Church of St. Leonard’s, Keevil nr Trowbridge, taking over from Mr Martin Nye. Around 70 guests attended the ceremony and reception.
Dr Alexander Goodwin recently retired after 31 years as a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the RUH NHS Foundation Trust in Bath. He trained at St Thomas’s, spent eight years in the Royal Navy and, following specialist training and research in Cambridge and Oxford, Alex became a consultant in Bath, including 14 years as Clinical Director. He is a Clinical Coordinator at the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death and is one of professional rugby’s Independent Match Day Doctors. Alex is also a trustee of the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Forces Welfare Fund.
Alex lives in the lovely Wiltshire village of Keevil with his wife, Juliette; they have three adult children.
In addition to the customary role of supporting the Judiciary, Police, Emergency services and the voluntary sector, Alex has chosen as his theme for the year as “Outdoor activity to promote health and wellbeing”. He looks forward to meeting charities and other organisations working in this area.
