Dorothy House to mark 50 years with spectacular light installation

A large-scale light installation will illuminate the grounds of Dorothy House near Bath this autumn and winter, as the hospice marks its 50th anniversary.

Moments of Light will run at Dorothy House in Winsley from 1 October until 31 December, offering visitors a place to reflect on life, love and loss surrounded by light and nature.

The free installation has been created by internationally renowned light artist and Dorothy House ambassador Bruce Munro, whose work has been exhibited around the world.

Designed around the idea of light continuing through darkness, Moments of Light reflects the hospice’s work supporting people approaching the end of their lives, as well as their families and loved ones.

Bruce Munro said: “I am honoured to create this new work for Dorothy House as part of its anniversary celebrations.

“My hope is that Moments of Light will offer visitors a space to breathe, reflect and feel held within an environment shaped by care, beauty and nature.”

Dorothy House has cared for more than 75,000 people since it was founded 50 years ago and provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care across an area of around 800 square miles, including communities in and around Bath.

Wayne de Leeuw, CEO of Dorothy House, said the installation reflects the heart of the charity’s work.

“For 50 years, we have walked alongside people during some of the most tender moments of their lives,” he said.

“This installation brings that spirit of compassion and reflection to a wider community of individuals who will inevitably all encounter death and grief at some point in their lives.”

Visitors will also have the opportunity to dedicate a light on a Firefly in memory of someone special, becoming part of a growing display of remembrance.

Entry to Moments of Light is free, although visitors are encouraged to make a donation. Money raised will support Dorothy House in continuing to provide specialist end-of-life care to patients and their loved ones.

Moments of Light runs at Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley from Thursday 1 October until Thursday 31 December 2026. Tickets are free but should be booked in advance.
