Bath Community Debate: Should Bath Become England’s First 20mph City?

hould Bath become England’s first 20mph city? That’s the question at the heart of a community debate taking place at St Luke’s Church, Wellsway, on Thursday 8 October 2026.
Residents are invited to join an evening of discussion exploring whether Bath should introduce a city-wide 20mph speed limit, with speakers presenting differing perspectives on the proposal.
The debate will bring together two prominent voices on the issue:
Guy Hodgson, former Chair of Walk/Ride Bath and current representative of the national 20’s Plenty campaign, will present the case in favour of a wider 20mph approach.
Mark Shelford, former local ward councillor and immediate past Police and Crime Commissioner, will offer an alternative perspective, advocating a more nuanced approach to speed limits rather than a blanket 20mph policy.
The discussion will be chaired by Jeremy Boss, Chair of the Federation of Bath Residents’ Associations.
The event provides an opportunity for local people to hear both sides of the debate and consider how future speed limit policies could affect Bath’s roads, residents and communities.
