Bath College student selected for “Skills Olympics” in Shanghai

A former Bath College student is heading to the global stage after being selected to represent the UK at one of the world’s most prestigious skills competitions.

Oliver Combs, who studied Mechanical Engineering at Bath College, will compete in Additive Manufacturing as part of Team UK at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 this September.

Often described as the “Skills Olympics”, the event brings together the most talented apprentices and young professionals from around the world to compete at the highest level.

A global stage for world-class talent

WorldSkills will see around 1,500 competitors from over 80 countries go head to head across a wide range of disciplines, from renewable energy and 3D game design to health and social care and engineering.

With more than 250,000 visitors expected, the event is a major international showcase of technical excellence, innovation and future skills.

A huge achievement

Oliver’s selection follows a demanding journey through regional and national competitions, alongside intensive specialist training both in the UK and internationally.

He will now continue high-performance training in the lead up to Shanghai, preparing to compete against the very best in his field.

Speaking about his selection, Oliver said:

“Being selected for Team UK is a significant milestone. The training and competition process has pushed me to develop both my technical skills and my approach to challenges, particularly in precision, time management, and working under pressure.”

Representing Bath on the world stage

Team UK is selected and trained by WorldSkills UK, bringing together some of the most skilled young professionals in the country.

Ben Blackledge, Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, described the selection as a proud moment, highlighting the importance of developing young talent with both technical ability and the mindset to succeed.

Pearson, the official partner of Team UK, also praised the dedication and ambition of competitors, recognising the event as an opportunity to set new standards of excellence on a global stage.

Inspiring the next generation

Oliver’s achievement is not only a personal milestone, but also a reflection of the strength of vocational training and skills development locally.

Events like WorldSkills play a key role in raising the profile of technical education and inspiring more young people to pursue hands-on, career-focused pathways.
