Bath College Apprentice Wins Bronze Medal at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

A talented engineering apprentice from Bath College has achieved international success after winning a bronze medal at the prestigious WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition, showcasing the exceptional technical skills being developed here in the South West.
Oliver Coombs, an engineering apprentice at Bath College, represented the United Kingdom on the world stage, competing against some of the most talented young professionals in his field to secure bronze in Additive Manufacturing.
Oliver was one of just 28 young professionals selected to represent the UK at the international competition, demonstrating his expertise in 3D printing, scanning and rapid prototyping before an audience of thousands.
WorldSkills is recognised internationally as a benchmark for excellence in vocational and technical skills, bringing together talented young people from across the globe to demonstrate the expertise needed to support future industries and economic growth.
From National Gold to International Bronze
Oliver’s achievement marks another milestone in a journey that began in March 2024.
Having previously competed online and in Manchester, where he secured a gold medal in the UK competition, Oliver progressed to represent his country at the WorldSkills final in Shanghai.
Reflecting on the experience, Oliver said:
“Competing at WorldSkills Shanghai was a great challenge and a real test of working under pressure. Designing 3D parts within a set timeframe forced me to streamline my workflow and troubleshoot on the fly.”
He added:
“Winning bronze made all the hard work and preparation worth it. And the experience has given me a lot of confidence in my technical skills and career prospects.”
A Proud Moment for Bath College
Eric Masuku, Mechanical Engineering Lecturer at Bath College, praised Oliver’s dedication and determination throughout the competition.
“Oliver has been on an amazing journey with the WorldSkills competition since March 2024. He has competed online and in Manchester, where he won the gold medal in the UK competition.
“Throughout his journey, he has embraced the challenge and worked hard to master new techniques while building valuable contacts in the industry. Above all, he has shown resilience, commitment and enthusiasm for additive manufacturing.”
Eric also highlighted Oliver’s commitment to developing his skills and the pride felt across the college.
“He thoroughly deserves the bronze medal. I congratulate him on embracing the challenge and running with it. The college is proud of his achievement.”
Supporting the Next Generation of Engineers
Oliver’s employer, BIMTek, has played an important role in his development, providing practical training and valuable workplace experience alongside his studies.
The company’s investment in apprenticeships is helping to nurture the next generation of engineering professionals in the South West, demonstrating the importance of collaboration between education providers and local employers.
Bath College has recognised BIMTek’s contribution to Oliver’s success and its wider commitment to developing young talent within the engineering services industry.
Celebrating Local Talent on the World Stage
As a Radio Bath Patron, Bath College plays an important role in supporting the local community, and Oliver’s achievement is a wonderful example of the opportunities available to young people pursuing technical and vocational careers.
With more than 300 courses and approximately 12,500 learners, Bath College continues to provide education and training opportunities for young people, apprentices and adult learners across Bath, North East Somerset and beyond.
Oliver’s success is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Bath College and the wider community.
