Yes, Prime Minister brings political satire to Theatre Royal Bath
One of British television’s best-known political comedies is heading to Theatre Royal Bath as Yes, Prime Minister returns to the stage in a new production.
The stage comedy reunites audiences with Prime Minister Jim Hacker and the formidable Sir Humphrey Appleby, bringing the characters created for the classic BBC television series into a contemporary political setting.
This time, a tense weekend at Chequers sees Hacker confronted by a struggling economy, party infighting, media pressure and a high-stakes loan, all while attempting to navigate the Civil Service and, inevitably, Sir Humphrey.
The production retains the verbal sparring and elaborate exchanges that became trademarks of the original series, while its story explores subjects including financial crises, Europe and political corruption through satire.
Jay Villiers takes on the role of Jim Hacker, with Clive Hayward playing Sir Humphrey Appleby.
They are joined in the cast by William Owen, Ruth Gibson, Maurey Richards and Mark Stratton.
The production has received four-star reviews from Theatre Weekly and West End Best Friend, with particular praise for the performances of Villiers and Hayward and the production’s handling of the much-loved characters.
