Official opening unveils new cycle hub, improved bus facilities and enhanced accessibility delivered for growing community

A major £2.3 million transformation of Chippenham station has been completed, delivering significant improvements for passengers, cyclists, and the local community.

The south side forecourt project has created a modern, accessible transport hub while respecting the station’s Grade II listed heritage.

A new 200-space enclosed cycle hub concludes the improvements, alongside expanded capacity for buses creating more bus rail connection opportunities, and a new taxi rank conveniently located near the platform exit. The redesigned pick-up/drop-off area features a widened entrance which removes a traffic pinch point and helps to reduce delays.

Step-free ramp access and enhanced disabled parking improve accessibility. New planting, trees and seating create a pleasant and more secure space for people making transport connections; an expanded pedestrian forecourt with natural stone paving respects the station’s Grade II listed heritage. New walking routes now connect directly to Chippenham College and the town centre which follows on from the earlier introduction of a new bridge with lifts connecting both sides of the railway.

Tom Pierpoint, Industry Programme Director for Network Rail and Great Western Railway said:

“This transformation creates a station Chippenham can be proud of, providing modern facilities to support the growing community and the local economy.

“Continuing to invest in the railway, the new cycle hub and improved bus connections support sustainable travel, while enhanced accessibility for all users ensures the station works for everyone it serves.

Wiltshire Council partnered throughout to ensure the improvements met community needs.

Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said:

“By working together, we’ve delivered upgrades that strengthen Wiltshire’s transport network and make everyday travel easier for residents, businesses and visitors.

“These improvements reinforce our commitment to sustainable transport and long-term investment in the county. This shows this power of joint working to create real, lasting benefits for all.”

Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson helped to official unveil the new facilities and said:

“These improvements at Chippenham station are a fantastic investment in our town and those who rely on the railway. The new cycle hub, improved bus facilities and better accessibility will make a real difference for commuters, and visitors alike.

“It’s great to see partners working together to deliver a station that is safer, greener and fit for the future. I’m proud to support this project and the benefits it will bring to our community.”

The improvement works were made possible by the Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Wiltshire County Council, working in partnership with Network Rail and GWR.
